The Lewis 'Uig Sands' Chessmen

Discovered in 1831 on the Isle of Lewis, the Lewis Chessmen are a hoard of 12th-century medieval gaming pieces crafted from walrus ivory and whale teeth. Believed to have been made in Trondheim, Norway, these expressive, wide-eyed figures offer a fascinating glimpse into Viking-age craftsmanship and Norse influence in the Western Isles. Today, they remain split between the British Museum and National Museums Scotland.
